CLIENT CASE STUDY
Ecovillage Pachamama
Our Focus
Creating water retention systems and a dam to transform harmful erosion runoff into a swimmable lake for families to enjoy.
Location

Nosara, Costa Rica
Challenge and Solution
The Pachamama valley faced severe erosion caused by unmanaged runoff, creating deep ruts that threatened land stability and disrupted water flow.
Poor soil quality and a harsh dry season further hindered food production, leaving the community reliant on costly, imported food.
We implemented a comprehensive water retention system, including two large detention ponds and dams to capture and store rainfall runoff. One of these reservoirs was designed as a swimmable lagoon, offering both a functional and recreational resource for the community.
To regenerate the land, we established a 3-hectare food forest, a composting center, and a greenhouse nursery for fruit tree cultivation, creating a sustainable and self-sufficient ecosystem.

Key Results
- Year-round water availability ensured by detention ponds, including a swimmable lagoon for community enjoyment.
- A 3-hectare food forest established, providing organic, locally grown produce.
- Soil fertility restored with a composting center and nursery for fruit tree propagation.

A Review from Pachamama Ecovillage
“Our entire ecosystem has changed since we installed the permaculture plan in our community, from eroded colins and valleys to ponds lush with forests and vibrant food gardens. The kids love swimming in the pond in the summer. The birds, turtles and all the other animals appreciate it deeply. Thank you.”
