CLIENT CASE STUDY
Finca Los Colibríes

Our Focus
Developing a detailed Site Analysis, Masterplan, and Implementation Plan for an integrative permaculture farm, with a strong emphasis on effective water management systems.
Location

Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Challenge and Solution
The property, nestled on the slopes of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, faced multiple challenges.
Key issues included controlling erosion caused by heavy seasonal rains, safeguarding soil fertility, and creating a sustainable agricultural system within the property’s unique topography and microclimate.
To address these challenges, a detailed Masterplan was developed. Swales and contour-based earthworks were designed to mitigate erosion and maximize water retention. Windbreak systems were strategically placed to shield vulnerable areas and protect crops.
A comprehensive food forest plan integrated fruit trees and nitrogen-fixing species, creating a resilient, multi-layered ecosystem.
Waste management strategies, a biointensive vegetable garden, and an on-site nursery for propagation ensured productivity while reducing external dependencies.

Key Results
- Implemented swales and ponds to control erosion and manage water.
- Designed food forests and rotational grazing areas for productivity.
- Mapped optimal locations for structures, paths, and energy systems.
